Brand new Christmas lights have been switched on for the first time in Bishop Auckland at a ceremony held on Friday.
More than 300 people attended the event and saw the new lights on Newgate Street, as well as special LED lighting used to illuminate Auckland Castle.
After children took part in a parade around the Christmas tree outside the castle grounds, the lights were switched on and a carol service took place in St. Peter’s Chapel.
“It’s been a fabulous experience to sing in such an amazing venue such as Auckland Castle, within the chapel,” said Caroline Stephens, who sang at the service. “It was a wonderful atmosphere and a wonderful turnout.”
Fundraising for new Christmas lights has been on-going throughout the year with the Town Team organising raffles and other initiatives.
Christmas events in Spennymoor and Shildon are set to take place over the next few weeks.
