Durham County Council’s Countryside Service is organising a two day course which aims to provide walkers with skills that are vital to a safe and enjoyable walk. The two-day course will take place between 10am and 3pm on Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September.
On the Saturday members of the public are invited to a location in Durham City to learn how to read a map and understand the symbols, as well as discovering how to find and give grid references. Attendees will also be shown how to use a compass effectively. On Sunday participants will be given the chance to put their newly-gained skills to practical use in the stunning Durham Dales.
Maria Murphy – countryside development officer at Durham County Council – said, “Satnav and GPS are great, but there’s no substitute for being able to read a map. It’s an essential skill for anyone who enjoys being outside, especially in remote places.”
The cost of the course is £30 and bookings are being taken now. People will need to bring a Silva-type compass and a North Pennines Outdoor Leisure Map number 31 with them.
To book people should telephone 03000 264 589 or email countryside@durham.gov.uk.
