The community of County Durham is mourning the loss of Sir Paul Nicholson, who passed away at 86. Sir Paul was a prominent figure in the region’s business and public life, notably as chairman of the Sunderland brewery, the Vaux Group, from 1976 until 1999. He dedicated much of his life to enhancing the business landscape in the North East, chairing the Tyne and Wear Development Corporation and the Northern Region of the CBI.

He was also highly respected for his roles in the Brewers and Licensed Retailers Association and as the inaugural President of the North East Chamber of Commerce. Knighted in 1993 for his services to industry and public life, he later received the prestigious Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) in 2011.

In addition to his business acumen, Sir Paul served as High Sheriff of County Durham in 1980 and was appointed Lord Lieutenant in 1987, a position he held until his 75th birthday in 2013. As Lord Lieutenant, he emphasized diplomacy, working tirelessly to ease frictions and foster collaboration for the betterment of County Durham.

Sir Paul also played a pivotal role in preserving Auckland Castle, aiding in its acquisition by philanthropist Jonathan Ruffer and ensuring its status as a viable enterprise. His efforts extended to organizing royal visits and local honors ceremonies, leaving a lasting impact on the community.

His legacy is cherished by his family, including his wife Lady Sarah Nicholson and daughter Lucy, as well as by the countless individuals and organizations he supported throughout his remarkable life. Sir Paul’s contributions to the region will be remembered with great respect and gratitude.
