Northern Trains is gearing up for an exciting transformation by planning the biggest investment in its fleet’s history, potentially adding up to 450 new trains to its network! This move is set to benefit communities across the North of England. The train operator has reached out to top manufacturers, including Alstom, CAF, Hitachi (Newton Aycliffe), Siemens, and Stadler, to discuss providing these new trains.
The plan is to gradually replace the oldest trains in the fleet, many of which have been around since the 1980s and 90s. The goal is to upgrade around two-thirds of the current fleet within the next decade. These new trains will include a mix of electric, multi-modal (diesel/electric), and even battery-powered trains.
The first phase focuses on replacing the ageing Class 150, 155, and 156 trains. Additionally, it will introduce 12 electric three-carriage trains to improve local services between York, Leeds, Huddersfield, and Manchester. Future phases will continue this upgrade, ensuring our communities enjoy more modern, efficient, and environmentally-friendly trains.
The contract for these new trains is expected to be awarded in 2026, with the first trains arriving by 2030.
This massive investment promises to bring better, greener, and more reliable train services to the heart of our communities, improving daily commutes and travel experiences for everyone.
