McIntyre Centre to Foster Community Pride in Bishop Auckland

The newly renovated McIntyre Centre, located in the heart of Bishop Auckland, is set to become a cornerstone of the community, with hopes of rekindling the town’s sense of pride and togetherness. Originally a historic shoe shop and leather goods store, this Grade II listed building on Newgate Street has been transformed into a vibrant community hub through a project funded by the Conservation Area Grant Scheme.

Shaun Hope, Principal of Bishop Auckland College, emphasizes the vision behind the McIntyre Centre. The centre aims to bring education and opportunities directly to the community, offering a variety of services such as skills training, job opportunities, and educational resources. This initiative was inspired by the Stronger Towns Boards and driven by the goal of supporting local employment.

Key to this vision was the participation of the community in the planning and development of the centre. The McIntyre Centre now features a training kitchen and restaurant to prepare individuals for careers in the hospitality sector, a digital suite for enhancing digital skills, and spaces for start-up businesses to thrive. These facilities aim to serve current students, new learners, entrepreneurs, and various community groups, making the centre a bustling hub of activity.

Mr Hope highlights the significance of revitalizing the iconic McIntyre Centre, noting its historical importance to local families and its potential to be a symbol of pride for the town. The building’s transformation reflects a blend of respect for its heritage and a forward-looking vision for community growth.

With its focus on community engagement and empowerment, the McIntyre Centre is poised to become a symbol of pride for Bishop Auckland. The centre will also contribute to the visitor economy, further supported by philanthropic investments from figures such as Jonathan Ruffer. As the centre opens its doors, residents eagerly anticipate the positive changes it will bring, creating a shared space for learning, growth, and connection.
