Evelyn May Wood came to County Durham on holiday from Berkshire in 1939 and liked it so much that she’s stayed here.
Over seventy years after meeting bricklayer Albert, who worked at Eldon Drift, Evelyn has celebrated her 100th birthday. In 1941, Evelyn and Albert married at St Mark’s Church, Eldon. Evelyn recalls: “Because the war was on, we didn’t have a big do. Four people attended and we did have a cake, but didn’t have it iced.”
Staying active Evelyn can be found dress making, icing cakes and still knits all her own cardigans.
To mark Evelyn’s birthday she was joined by Cllr Pauline Charlton, vice chairman of Durham County Council, who presented her with a basket of flowers to mark the occasion.
